Get up early for the best experiences

Early mornings give you the island almost to yourself. You’ll mostly meet locals, and if you head a little inland, you may encounter wildlife such as monkeys in the trees and a chorus of exotic bird sounds. It’s also cooler at this time of day, making it much easier to walk the sometimes steep paths up to the viewpoints. Don’t forget mosquito repellent.

Follow Thai news and information channels

Whether through news outlets or social media. For us, this provided valuable insight into what was happening around us—including a tragic speedboat accident nearby while we were there. It also meant we were prepared when a nationwide emergency alert test was sent to all mobile phones, allowing us to reassure worried passengers on the ferry.

Bring cash when you arrive

This saves you from having to search for ATMs right away. You can head straight for taxis, ferries, food, and drinks without any hassle.

Use ATMs wisely

Always choose without conversion when withdrawing cash to get the best exchange rate.

Walk away from the busiest main streets

That’s where you’ll find small, authentic, and affordable local eateries—often with far better food than the most tourist-heavy spots.

Choose ferries or longtail boats—avoid speedboats

Speedboats travel fast, rides are often bumpy and uncomfortable, and you sit low with limited visibility. Unfortunately, there are many stories of accidents and serious injuries. Slowing down is both safer and far more enjoyable.

Be aware of the tides

Tidal differences can be several meters, and many beaches are shallow. One moment you may be neck-deep after just a few steps, and a few hours later you can walk hundreds of meters with water only up to your ankles.

Always watch your step—I personally stepped on a long-spined black sea urchin with venomous spines. Not dangerous, but extremely painful.

Stay for several days

This island has so much to offer—whether you’re looking for lively surroundings, peace and quiet, or a mix of both. Phi Phi deserves more than a quick visit.

Fruit smoothies are essential

We couldn’t live without them. My daughter swears by watermelon, but you’ll also find mango, dragon fruit, strawberries, and many other flavors—all blended with ice made from bottled water.

Be polite—alwaysThai people are friendly and courteous. Be the same in return. Learn a few basic phrases:Sawadee ka (female) / Sawadee krap (male) means hello or good day, and Khob khun ka/krap means thank you. It goes a long way.
